Ultimate Guide to Take an RV into Flaming Gorge

Can you take an RV there?

Yes! This area is big rig friendly. That means you CAN take a bigger RV down to the shore and have enough room to turn around to leave.

We drove our 45ft 5th wheel down to the shores and did not have any problems. Now if you see a hill that looks like a road do NOT take your RV up it. Those are for the ATV’s to drive on. We joked with our kids that we were going to have to drive up that hill in the second picture below.

Parking Options

You can park anywhere along the Flaming Gorge shores with your RV. Some are campgrounds with hookups others are boondocking locations.

Which boondocking spots are free?

Driving down to the shore and see a parking lot with a public bathroom this location requires a Pass. You will need to purchase a Flaming Gorge Pass or have an Interagency Pass. If you have a 4th Grader you can get a Free 4th Grader National Parks Pass.

Any location that does not look like it has been upgraded by the U.S. Forest Service is available for free parking.

How long you can park an RV here for?

14 days is the max amount of time you can have your RV dry camping at Flaming Gorge Reservoir

Flaming Gorge Pass

1 day pass- $5

7 day pass- $15

Annual pass- $35

Drive from Hwy 530, turn east on to Anvil Draw Rd. That will take you down a gravel road about 2 miles to the shoreline. There will be many turn-offs to chose from. Each path will lead you to a different part of the shore to park your RV.

Check out our Youtube video below of our visit to Flaming Gorge and where we parked the RV and truck.

I actually looked at the satellite maps on my phone to pin point where exactly we wanted to park our RV at. Checking the satellite map image on your phone will help you see where RV’s are parked at along the shore line.

Wyoming or Utah of Flaming Gorge?

State Route 530 runs north and south from Wyoming to Utah. It’s on the west side of Flaming Gorge in Wyoming this makes it easily accessible by the highway. Traveling to the south part of Flaming Gorge in Utah will have more campgrounds available compared to the Wyoming side. Both areas are quite beautiful with endless amounts of outdoor activities to enjoy.

Choosing a Place to Park

Boondocking

Dry camping is called Boondocking. This type of camping is free or pretty cheap; you will not be connected to water, electricity, or sewer. To learn more about what is “boondocking” head over to my friend’s blog Adventures with Tucknae; they have a blog post that explains everything out perfectly. Since we are fairly new to boondocking so we are still learning about it and she has been extremely informational.
